Frequently Asked Questions
(FAQ)
What is microsuction?
Microsuction is a safe and effective method of ear wax removal using gentle suction under direct visual guidance. It is widely regarded as the preferred method of wax removal and does not involve water.
Is microsuction safe?
Yes. Microsuction is considered very safe when performed by a trained practitioner. Every appointment includes a full ear assessment to ensure treatment is suitable before proceeding.
Do you offer home visits?
Yes. Southend Ear Care offers convenient home visit appointments across Southend-On-Sea and surrounding areas. This is ideal for elderly clients, mobility issues, or those who prefer treatment at home.
How much does ear wax removal cost?
Our pricing is clear and transparent:

-
£60 Home visit microsuction (both ears + assessment)
-
£25 Assessment only (if no wax is present)
-
£50 Additional household member (same address, same visit)
What happens if I don't have any wax?
If no wax is present during the assessment, you will only be charged the assessment fee of £25. You will also receive professional advice and reasussurance.
Do I need olive oil before my appointment?
Using olive oil drops for 3-5 days before your appointment can help soften wax and improve comfort. However, it is not always essential and depends on the type of ear wax present.
How long does microsuction take?
Most appointments take between 20-30 minutes, depending on the amount and type of wax present and whether one or both ears require treatment.
Does microsuction hurt?
Microsuction is usually comfortable and well tolerated. Some clients may feel mild discomfort, sensitivity, or a loud suction sound, but the procedure is generally quick and gentle.
Can microsution make you dizzy?
Some clients may experience brief dizziness during or after treatment. This is usually temporary and resolves quickly.
Can you remove wax if I wear hearing aids?
Yes. Hearing aid users often experience increased wax build up. Microsuction is a suitable option and can help improve hearing aid performance.
Can you treat tinnitus (ringing in the ears)?
Microsuction cannot treat tinnitus directly, but if tinnitus is being worsened by wax build-up, removal may improve symptoms.
Who should NOT have microsuction?
Microsuction may not be suitable if you have:

-
recent ear surgery
-
history of mastoid surgery
-
Unable to stay still

If microsuction is not appropriate, you will be advised to seek GP or ENT care.
Is ear syringing the same as microsuction?
No. Ear syringing uses water irrigation, whereas microsuction uses gentle suction and direct visual guidance. Microsuction is often preferred as it is more controlled and does not introduce water into the ear canal.
How often should I have my ears checked?
This varies. Some people never build up wax, while others may benefit from a check every 6-12 months, especially hearing aid users or those prone to wax blockage.
What are the signs of blocked ear wax?
Common symptoms include:

-
reduced hearing
-
blocked or full feeling in the ear
-
discomfort or itching
-
ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
-
dizziness
-
hearing aid whistling or reduced function

Aftercare advice includes:

-
keep ears dry for 24-48 hours
-
avoid cotton buds or inserting objects into the ear
-
contact your GP if you experience pain, bleeding or discharge
